Subject: Why I signed the Amethyst Initiative

Earlier this year I joined the Amethyst Initiative to spur national debate on the legal drinking age. Publicly launched in July 2008, the Amethyst Initiative is made up of chancellors and presidents of universities and colleges across the United States. These higher education leaders have signed their names to a public statement that the 21-year-old drinking age is not working, and, specifically, that it has contributed to the creation of a culture of dangerous binge drinking on their campuses.

The Amethyst Initiative supports informed and unimpeded debate on the 21-year-old drinking age. Amethyst Initiative presidents and chancellors call upon elected officials to weigh all the consequences of current alcohol policies and to invite new ideas on how best to prepare young adults to make responsible decisions about alcohol use.

With input and support from the senior leadership of our Student Affairs administrators, I joined the initiative because I believe that universities can most effectively engage students in developing personal accountability with alcohol when they are given opportunities to interact openly with their peers and other members of their community in socially responsible ways.

Clarkson faculty, staff and students learn and live together in a highly collaborative community. We are in the business of educating students both inside and outside the classroom. We fully abide by the legal-21 law with an admitted amount of frustration because we know that enforcement on our campus drives underage drinking out of public sight and limits opportunities to role model and encourage appropriate behavior with alcohol.

We have more in common with persons on the opposite side of the debate than we have differences and it is in those common areas that the debate and future action should focus. All sides of the debate wish to avoid the negative consequences associated with poor choices around alcohol consumption, most significant among those being drunk driving. I believe we all endorse full enforcement of those laws.

As a nation, however, we are not addressing the more systemic issue of excessive drinking among some cohorts of our youngest adults — adults with voting rights, adults serving our country in military uniform and adults building families in our communities. We have taken the easy road in trying to legislate behavior rather than focus on teaching and instilling personal responsibility. As a college educator, I am committed to promoting an open dialogue where responsible choices are respected, and where we role model the kinds of behavior we seek to inspire for a safe and well rounded campus life.

The time for this kind of debate is now. Young adults across the country are engaged in the political process like never before and in exciting ways. Those of us on college campuses see their energy and their mature sense of purpose as they acknowledge their role as the future leaders to address many of the most critical issues of our time — global climate change and renewable energy, peace and civil justice around the world, and the creation of economic opportunities for all of humanity to live rewarding lives.

Just as we support open dialogue about these critical issues impacting our society, our University’s participation in the Amethyst Initiative is intended to bring alcohol issues out in the open, encourage productive conversations about the real issues we seek to address and work towards solutions that address the mutual concerns of all who are impacted by the personal decisions individuals make when they consume alcohol. We offer the AlcoholEdu program to all first-year students and others on campus health and wellness initiatives. Clarkson in no way condones underage drinking and will continue to enforce the age-21 law on its campus. We do endorse and ask for the debate of this law to begin.

As always, I welcome your comments to me at president@clarkson.edu.

So we just did our housing lottery, and my roommate had #4, so we knew we would be able to get whatever we wanted. When we showed up, 1,2,3 didn't show up, so we were first. Other kids ended up staying for 3+ hours, we were out in 15 mins. Room 223 Moore House! Its a suite with 14x18 rooms and a shared bathroom. Life is good.

Also in slightly less interesting news. I am now a Manager at the Clarkson Phone-A-Thon. Better pay, more hours, and much less work.

Next year I am taking some sweet classes as an Electrical Engineering Major.
EE261 - Intro to Programming and Software Design
ES250 - Electrical Science
ES260 - Materials Science
MA232 - Differential Equations
LW270 - Law and Society

Should be a sweet year, oh!

This summer my goal is to save up some money and buy a 99 Saab 9-5turbo Manual hatchback. and sell my car of course.

Cheers!

SO we lost hockey tonight, but it wasn't for lack of cheering. I fucking cheered my brains out! So we pregamed around 5, I had already started at 3. At 5 we started to paint faces, I was the first one! It was awesome, I'm sure some photos will show up on facebook. I know my face wasn't the sweetest, coopers was. Although Justin's was pretty sweet. So then we came back here after the game to hang. Ashley called and tried to persuade us to go to "a frat" that will remain nameless. Zack and I wanted to go but no one else wanted to and Nate was adament against it. So we chilled. Ash showed up with her family, they are pretty cool, not on a head trip as some people are. Anyway her and I convinced everyone to go to said frat, including nate. I went with ash, her sis, sis's bf, and brother. The rest of them went in mandles car. So we get there and not only are they full but they will allow ash in, cause in clarkson, if you have tits you have power. Ofcourse by those rules I should be king but i digress. So Fucking ash asks me to get into mandles car cause they kicked nate out cause hes a dumbass. So I get in there to find out that nate is gonna get in with them, as apposed to me! WTF! Fuck that shit. We peel out of there! We go to dunkin' donuts, and get free donuts because I am absolutely awesome, and an idiot. So then we drove fast down back roads, ahd some fun, I will find out how much in the morning cause there is a tape, and then we got back. then the bitch got back, and decided to slap our partyin te face, and Im just very angry. Nate is a dumbshit girls have too much power in potsdam, and I need some ass. Tomorrow night I will hunt for ass. That is my goal. Cheers! Blood sucking deamon of the underworld.

The guys from EepyBird are back, with 251 bottles of Diet Coke and over 1,500 Mentos mints. In Experiment #137, they did a mint-powered version of the Bellagio fountains. This time, it's one giant Coke & Mentos chain reaction that has to be seen to be believed.

So my Grandma and Uncle are officially the coolest people ever.

My Grandma sent me an email that said this...

"See what happens when you go to Clarkson, get that good job, and work hard.

Grandma"

Attached were five pictures my uncle took of his new toy, mind you he went to Clarkson back in 1977, and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Same as me!

Here are the pictures attached: http://flickr.com/photos/copertop/290098566/

OMG! I freaked out! I hope he brings it up for thanksgiving! he lives in Indiana.
